City University - Tait Building, London

The project was carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the 364-seat Oliver Thompson Theatre was stripped of seating, flooring and asbestos. Timber acoustic panelling was replaced and a new projection room, seating, flooring and lighting installed. New plasma TV's were provided, the protection screen refreshed and air-conditioning upgraded. Fifteen rooms were prepared to relocate office staff with all works being undertaken on an occupied floor.

The second phase of the project saw the refurbishment of office space that had been freed up during phase one. Internal walls were demolished and new clinical teaching spaces - mock hospital wards - were created, linked up with audio-visual installations for teaching diagnosis. A new air handling unit was installed on the roof of the building.

An extra £300k of work was carried out by extending working hours with no impact on the programme schedule. Eighty-nine per cent of waste from the project was recycled.
